Gone Fishing
News from the Angling section, who've been right in it...
“Gone Fishing”: You can't help but love Mortimer and Whitehouse on their fishing adventures on some of the most picturesque fishing waters in the country. These waters look lovely and reflect how fishing and nature go hand in hand. We in the Fishing Club believe deeply in nature conservation and developing bio-diversity on all our fisheries, some of which are very sensitive and are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) or Nature Reserve. We work closely with stakeholders such as Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, Friends of Stockers lake, Natural England and the Environment Agency to maintain, develop and improve the fisheries.
This season has been particularly challenging, the storms and flooding generating loads of extra work, however our members have been very supportive to our working parties and we have managed most of our planed work and projects. One such project is to manage duckweed (Lemna) a familiar site in ponds, duckweed multiplies rapidly forming large mats that cover the waters surface and can outcompete other aquatic plants and reduce biodiversity.
We are working with an engineering company and the Environment Agency Fisheries team to install an industrial size pond skimmer (photo at top), only the second of its kind in the UK, this we hope will remove and control the duckweed during the growing season.
