BA Clubs do well at World Airline Road Race

Tim Bellars fastest BA Clubs entrant

The 38th annual World Airline Road Race (WARR) was held on September 7th in Amsterdam hosted by KLM Road Runners. The event doubled as a celebration for KLM's centenary as an airline and, as well as sponsoring and providing facilities for the event, KLM also encouraged employees to run the races which resulted in over 1,000 KLM employees featuring in the results!

WARR consists of 10k and 5k road races held on the same morning and with many participants undertaking both races. The single lap courses were laid out within the beautiful Amsterdam Forest which is a stone's throw from Schiphol Airport.   The finish was in the middle of KLM's HQ complex and to facilitate this the airline had funded a sturdy pontoon bridge constructed across the canal between the HQ and the Amsterdam Forest! The weather on the day was a nice temperature for running and the threatened showers avoided the period of the races.

Around 1,000 employees of the world's airlines joined the 1,000 KLM employees so the 10k had 1,098 finishers and the 5k 1,359. The British Airways Athletics Section supported a team of staff and associates with 35 members, of whom 17 were current or former employees and 6 were BA Clubs members - from Cardiff and Gatwick as well as Heathrow. Tim Bellars was the fastest of the BA Clubs members finishing the 10k in 45:01 and then the 5k in 22:21. Michelle Garrett was our fastest lady finishing in 52:34 and 26:51 respectively. Of the non-BA Clubs members Paul Knechtl finished 6th overall in the 10k and 10th overall in the 5k to win age category prizes and Julie Barclay finished 7th lady in the 10k to likewise win an age category award.

WARR provided an opportunity to meet up with the other airline WARRiors at a number of events before race day and at the awards on the Saturday evening and also an excuse to visit the canals, museums, windmills and other attractions of Holland. All those who attended will be eagerly anticipating next year's event, whose host and venue is yet to be announced.
